Ohio police chased a giant inflatable pumpkin that blew off a homeowner’s yard and blocked two lanes of traffic in Parma Heights.
The pumpkin, a large orange jack‑o‑lantern, launched into the air on a windy night and floated across the intersection, forcing a traffic stop. According to the Parma Heights Police Department, officers followed the runaway decoration for several minutes before finally catching it. The department posted body‑camera footage of the chase on Facebook, showing officers running after, pulling it to the ground, and struggling to deflate it.
Officers laughed when one explained that the pumpkin “just took off” the moment they tried to grab it. After a short standoff, the officers carried the pumpkin into the back of a patrol car and returned it to its owner with no injuries or damage. In a tongue‑in‑cheek comment, the police posted that the pumpkin was quickly “detained and returned to its owner without incident.”
The incident follows a bizarre event last October, when an Ohio officer was reportedly “attacked” by a runaway inflatable pumpkin. That same year, another officer was chased by wild turkeys during a traffic stop—again captured on viral footage. Neither event resulted in harm, but both highlighted the unexpected hazards of late‑autumn decorations.
The police department’s swift resolution reassured residents that the pumpkin, while impressive, was a harmless and well‑handled holiday prop. Local officials encourage homeowners to secure inflatable decorations against strong winds to avoid future “pumpkin chases” and potential traffic disruptions.
