Box-office blues: Why ‘Ek Chatur Naar’, ‘Love in Vietnam’, ‘Heer Express’ turned out to be disasters?
Mumbai’s box office took a big hit this Friday as a bunch of small-budget films bombed hard. We’re talking about releases like Ek Chatur Naar, Love in Vietnam, Heer Express, Mannu Kya Karega, and Jugnuma – The Fable. These Bollywood movies and indie flicks failed to draw crowds, leaving producers sweating over their investments.
Trade expert Girish Wankhede broke it down for , explaining why these films flopped despite not clashing with any major blockbusters. Usually, small films struggle against big tentpole releases, but when similar low-budget movies hit theaters together and still tank, something’s seriously off.
"These five films were total washouts," Wankhede said. He shared the disappointing numbers: Ek Chatur Naar raked in just around ₹50 lakhs, Love in Vietnam managed a measly ₹6 lakhs, Mannu Kya Karega hit ₹45 lakhs, Jugnuma scraped by with ₹5 lakhs, and Heer Express topped the list at ₹55 lakhs. In some theaters, shows got canceled outright because no one showed up. Ouch!
The main culprit? Shoddy marketing strategies. These films barely made a ripple online or in the news, so audiences had no clue they even existed. "There’s zero buzz or visibility," Wankhede pointed out. "Ask anyone on the street—they won’t know about Heer Express, Jugnuma, or Ek Chatur Naar releasing. Without solid promotion, how do you expect people to rush to theaters for box office success?"
But it’s not just marketing woes. Wankhede also slammed the weak content in these movies. Strong stories could have saved them through good reviews or word-of-mouth hype. "The content isn’t gripping, and marketing is nonexistent," he added. "If the film had real power, it’d spread like wildfire. When both fall flat, disaster strikes every time."
This flop fest serves as a wake-up call for indie filmmakers eyeing Bollywood box office hits. Better promotion and compelling narratives are key to turning small releases into surprise successes.
