Cristina Biffle—wife of former NASCAR racer Greg Biffle—sent a chilling message to her mother right before a fatal crash claimed the lives of the couple, their 14‑year‑old daughter Emma and 5‑year‑old son Ryder.
The family was aboard a Cessna C500 that went down and burst into flames as it tried to land at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina just before 10:30 a.m. ET, according to reports from People.
When asked later, Cathy Grossu said that Cristina had sounded frantic on the plane, telling her, “We’re in trouble.” The text sent just moments before the wreckage confirmed the distress she sensed. After the tragedy, Grossu described the pain as “devastated” and “brokenhearted.” The Biffles were on their way to Florida for a birthday trip when the accident occurred.
The crash also claimed Craig Wadsworth, Dennis Dutton, and Dutton’s son Jack. Emergency crews captured a terrifying video of the aircraft aflame on the runway as they rushed to the scene. Grossu said she couldn’t imagine that the family was gone and found it “hard to bear.”
People also reported that the last conversation Cristina had with her mother involved Christmas letters she was sending to families in need. “Mom, can you go pick up the last 17 letters that are at Staples? I want to get them in the mail before I get on the plane tomorrow,” she said. Cristina hurried to collect the letters, wrapped them in envelopes, and mailed them to 17 families—an act she believed would bring them joy.
Outside his racing career, Greg was recognized for his community service, notably helping residents of North Carolina after Hurricane Helene. He won 19 NASCAR Cup Series races and was a champion in the Busch Series.
