A video that went viral on the internet captures a most unbelievable moment: a plane appears to “drop out of the sky” and collides with a car on a jammed Florida interstate. The crash happened in the southbound lane of I‑95 in Cocoa around 5:45 p.m. Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The aircraft, a fixed‑wing multi‑engine airplane, slammed into a 2023 Toyota Camry. Footage from a dashcam shows the plane diving straight into the heavy‑traffic road during what seemed like a frantic emergency landing attempt. The collision left the car’s rear battered, the plane bounced on top of the vehicle before tipping slightly left, sending sparks into the air—an effect captured from the car directly behind the Camry.
The 57‑year‑old woman in the Camry was rushed to a nearby hospital, but she only sustained minor injuries, the FHP said. The pilot, a 27‑year‑old man from Orlando, and the 27‑year‑old passenger from Temple Terrace were unharmed. Their names have not yet been released, but they stayed at the crash site while investigators began work.
“We just saw this plane drop out of the sky,” told witness Jim Coffey to Spectrum News 13. Witnesses said the plane was only a few seconds away from striking Coffey’s vehicle, but instead it cleared him and struck another car. His son, Peter Coffey, who also saw the disaster, recalled, “I noticed it was there, because there’s a plane right there, I was like, ‘Hopefully it lands to the side,’” he said. “I thought it might maybe aim around and not hit the car, but bam, the wheel just smacked right dab on the back of the car.”
Jim Coffey added, “Fortunately, the car didn’t roll, it kind of mashed and went to the side.”
Additional photos from the scene show the car’s trunk twisted and the plane’s nose and wheels missing, indicating a violent impact.
Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration will lead the probe into the emergency landing, with the FHP conducting its own crash investigation. The FAA has not yet responded to inquiries about the case.
