Robert Tucker, the 54‑year‑old fire commissioner who took the role in December, has stepped down from his post just one day after Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral race. The resignation comes as the FDNY chief is scheduled to travel to Israel to meet with the country’s fire commissioner.
Tucker, a Jewish philanthropist and businessman, led the New York City Fire Department for a little over a year before his departure. He will return to the private security firm he headed prior to joining Mayor Eric Adams’ administration. Sources say the reason for his resignation is still unclear, and the commission has not yet released an official statement.
The timing of the resignation is noteworthy. It follows the election of Mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani, who faced criticism over his stance on Israel. With the FDNY boss set to fly to Israel later Wednesday, officials are reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
This is the first change in the city’s top fire safety leadership since the new mayor took office. New York City residents and commuters alike will be watching as the FDNY fills the vacancy amid a busy transition period.
