A shooting inside a Kentucky State University dorm on Wednesday turned deadly, with one student killed and another left in critical condition. Police revealed that the gunman, Jacob Lee Bard, 48, is the father of another student enrolled at the campus.
Bard, originally from Evansville, Indiana, was formally charged with murder and first‑degree assault after the incident at the Whitney M. Young Jr. residence hall on the south side of campus.
The attack took the life of 19‑year‑old De’Jon Fox from Indianapolis. The second victim remains seriously injured, though authorities have not released his identity. Investigators say the shooting was confined to the two involved parties, and they have yet to disclose the circumstances or possible motive.
When questioned about a rumored altercation involving Bard’s sons prior to the shooting or whether Bard had visited campus to discuss safety concerns with administrators, Frankfort Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy declined to speculate. “It’s really too early in the investigation to give any details that led up to it,” he explained. “A lot of it would be speculation.”
Police reviewed bystander video and campus surveillance footage. Officers responded at approximately 3:10 p.m. following a report of the shooting, arriving within minutes of the incident. By that time, Kentucky State University police had already taken Bard into custody. He is now being held in the Franklin County Regional Jail.
