The 20‑year‑old Austin Lynch, who was slated to drop his Army enlistment after a messy breakup with his 18‑year‑old girlfriend Emily Finn, fired a shotgun into Finn’s skull in their Nesconset home on November 26, then tried to kill himself with the same weapon.
Court records reveal chilling details about a Long Island teenager accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, Emily Finn, after becoming enraged over claims she would not remain “loyal” to him. In a furious, disorganized note, the teen lashed out at Finn, calling her “a lying manipulative bitch,” according to investigators.
Authorities say Austin Lynch shot 18-year-old Finn in the back of the head with a shotgun inside his family’s living room in Nesconset on Nov. 26. After the shooting, he allegedly attempted to take his own life in what prosecutors described as a failed murder-suicide.
Finn had gone to see Lynch that day to give back his belongings following the collapse of their three-year relationship.
In a stream-of-consciousness message, Lynch allegedly vented, “She’s a psycho and the whole reason for this i f–king hate her and saying she wouldn’t be loyal when i left for the marines and she would consider herself single pretty much sums up who she is.”
He continued in the note, writing, “I have set my mind on leaving this place the day before my 18th birthday at the start of this whole episode i thought i could get through it i had hope[d] we would reconnect and i had people guiding my [sic] through this time i haven’t had anyone besides my recruiter text me in a week.”
Lynch also complained, “I thought i knew emily and who i was dating but she’s a lying manipulative bitch and yet she still acts innocent and how i’m the bad person.”
Investigators found the disturbing note saved on Lynch’s cracked iPhone. The Suffolk County Digital Forensics Unit retrieved it using a search warrant, officials said.
Court filings indicate the note was written roughly six days before Finn was killed. Records also suggest Lynch believed she was interested in another boy.
According to prosecutors, Lynch visited Finn in October while she was a freshman at the State University of New York at Oneonta. That visit reportedly ended badly, with Lynch allegedly calling her a whore and later telling a friend he “wanted to show how angry he was.”
He also reportedly told that same friend he expected to be dead on Wednesday, Nov. 26 — the exact day he was scheduled to meet Finn.
A Charles Daly 12 Gauge semiautomatic shotgun believed to have been used in the killing was recovered at the scene. Prosecutors allege the weapon had been cleaned on Nov. 24, two days before the shooting, indicating Lynch deliberately loaded two shells into the gun ahead of time.
After shooting Finn, Lynch allegedly fired the weapon at himself but sustained only a minor injury to his nose.
He appeared in court Thursday with a long bandage running along his nose, showing no other visible injuries following the alleged suicide attempt.
Finn was laid to rest on Dec. 1 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sayville. Those attending the service wore her favorite color, pink, and raised donations for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in her memory.
Lynch has been charged with murder and could face life in prison if convicted.
