A home‑care worker in Long Island is charged with attempted murder after prosecutors say she stabbed an 84‑year‑old patient in her own bed and kept the knife in the woman’s body for an “excruciating” 16 minutes.
Amanda Fraser, 23, was indicted on Friday for the crime that occurred in her Massapequa residence on Oct. 29, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.
Fraser, who grew up in Queens, is accused of entering the elderly woman’s house at about 2:08 a.m., walking straight into the bedroom, and thrusting an eight‑inch chef’s knife into the patient’s torso.
Video footage and eyewitness testimony show the victim awaking in agony, moaning as she struggled to pull the blade free. Fraser is said to have grabbed the knife handle securely and ominously told the patient, “Just let go,” and “stop fighting it,” while the knife remained lodged in her body.
By roughly 2:24 a.m. she removed the knife and left the house. Police were called in at about 8:30 a.m. for a welfare check and found the woman bleeding heavily.
She was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center with a puncture wound to her lung, and she stayed in the hospital for treatment of an infection that developed from the stab wound until this week.
Official statements described the scene as the aide brandishing the blade over the sleeping victim, plunging it into the body, and holding it “firm in her body” for an “excruciating” 16 minutes while the woman “moaned in agony.”
When the victim did not die, Fraser reportedly left, leaving the patient alone and wounded in bed.
Donnelly emphasized that families depend on capable and caring home‑health aides, adding that this incident “brought pain and horror” to those the aide was meant to help.
The victim’s recovery continued at the hospital, but police later found Fraser’s Dodge Charger parked in the middle of the patient’s front lawn.
Fraser was arrested in Queens later that night by Nassau County officers. She was taken to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation before being arraigned. Aides at Home, the agency that employed her, stated that the stabbing was an isolated incident and that they were “cooperating fully” with the investigation. Representatives for the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
At her arraignment, Fraser faced second‑degree attempted murder, first‑degree assault, second‑degree assault, and charges for endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person as well as an incompetent or physically disabled person.
She was ordered held without bail and will return to court on Dec. 9. Prosecutors say a conviction could carry a maximum sentence of 25 years behind bars.
