Tibetan activists rallied outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Friday, September 27, voicing strong opposition to China and urging the world to back Tibetan independence.
The crowd chanted powerful slogans like “Free Tibet” and “China out of Tibet now,” drawing attention to their cause amid the bustling UN scene. Tashi Tundup, vice president of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of New York and New Jersey, spoke for the group. “We’re here to ask UN representatives and world leaders to support Tibet and push for its independence,” he said.
This protest came from the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, a local branch of the Tibetan Youth Congress—the biggest pro-independence group for Tibetans in exile. With more than 30,000 members around the world, the organization started in 1970 and keeps up a steady stream of protests and campaigns to spotlight Tibet’s political struggles.
The demonstration timed perfectly with the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where global leaders tackled big issues like economic tensions and international relations. On the session’s fourth day, China’s Premier Li Qiang took the stage to deliver a key address on behalf of President Xi Jinping, who skipped the event.
Li Qiang didn’t name-drop US President Donald Trump, but the shadow of US trade policies hung heavy over his remarks, as noted by Al Jazeera. He pointed to rising protectionism—like tariff hikes and trade barriers—as a key reason for today’s global economic slowdown.
“We need to work together more closely to find shared interests, build fair and inclusive economic globalization, and help each other thrive,” Li urged.
Trump’s bold tariff strategy aimed to shake up US industries and sparked a fierce US-China trade war that’s still dragging on with ongoing negotiations.
