Man fatally shot during child‑custody exchange in Mint Hill
A man was killed on Friday after he opened fire on police during a custody exchange in Mint Hill, a North Carolina suburb of Charlotte.
Two Mint Hill police officers were also shot and are now in critical condition, the department said in a social media post.
Officers were dispatched to an Edible Arrangement store around 10:45 a.m. to supervise the exchange. The suspect drew a handgun and began firing, prompting a return volley from the officers. The gunfight ended when the suspect was hit and died on the ground.
Nearby employees at Empire Pizza witnessed the scene. “We were on a smoke break when we saw the officers walk in, then saw one of them carrying another outside with blood on his hands,” said manager Kevin Phayme.
Mint Hill, home to roughly 27,000 residents, lies about 12 miles east of Charlotte.
