A key court hearing that would determine whether evidence could be barred from Luigi Mangione’s murder trial was put on hold, the judge said, because the defendant claims he is sick.
“Apparently the defendant is ill today,” Judge Gregory Carro announced right before the fourth day of testimony in the marathon pre‑trial proceeding, which was about to begin.
“Yes,” Mangione’s lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, replied, though the specifics of Mangione’s illness remained unclear.
The hearing will resume on Monday morning.
Mangione, 27, is attempting to block prosecutors from showing jurors the items Altoona, Pennsylvania, police found in his backpack after his arrest—most notably the gun alleged to have been used to kill UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thomson in Midtown last December. He also wants the judge to exclude several statements he made to police that may be used at trial. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
