A 12‑year‑old boy from Minnesota named Raghav Shrestha, who always wanted to become a police officer, was made an honorary cop a few hours before he died.
Raghav, a seventh‑grader at Sartell‑St. Stephen Middle School, rode his bike down a hill at Northside Park on Sunday afternoon. A crash caused a severe head injury—even though he wore a helmet— and the impact set off a heart attack. A friend called 911 but could not give a clear location. A CPR instructor on the scene helped the boy and called the police.
The police rushed Raghav to a Minneapolis hospital, but his condition worsened. By Thursday morning, doctors declared him brain dead. He was taken off life support that afternoon, and he died peacefully moments later.
Sartell Police Chief Brandon Silgjord sent a message to his team: “Raghav always dreamed of becoming a police officer.” In front of his tear‑filled family at Hennepin County Medical Center, the department gave Raghav a badge and swore him in as an honorary officer. The chief said the community would keep supporting the family as they grieve.
Raghav was described by those who knew him as a happy, spirited youngster who loved playing outside in the fall. His parents said they were proud of the brave, kind boy who cared for people and animals.
The town’s police and residents started a fundraiser for Raghav’s family. By Thursday night, donations had already reached almost $36,000. The support shows the community’s compassion for a child who was beloved by many.
If you want to honor Raghav or help the family, you can donate through the nonprofit fundraiser linked in the police department’s post.
