Sergio Gor, US President Donald Trump’s pick for Ambassador to India, shared some warm insights on the strong bond between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Senate confirmation hearing. Speaking to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday, the 38-year-old White House official called their friendship “incredible and unique,” saying it could supercharge the US-India strategic partnership.
“Our President has a deep friendship with Prime Minister Modi, which is unique,” Gor said. He pointed out how Trump often praises Modi personally, even amid trade tensions like the recent US tariffs on Indian exports. “When the President has been critical of India, he goes out of his way to compliment PM Modi. They have an incredible relationship.”
Gor, who currently serves as Director of Presidential Personnel in the White House, laid out his plans to boost ties if confirmed. He stressed India’s key role in the Indo-Pacific region, thanks to its location, booming economy, and strong military. “India is a strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond,” he told the committee. “If confirmed, I will prioritise deepening defence and security cooperation with India.”
These comments come at a tricky time for US-India relations. The US recently slapped 50% tariffs on some Indian exports, tied to India’s purchases of Russian oil amid the Ukraine conflict. Still, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio backed Gor’s views, calling India “one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world.”
Trump nominated Gor in January to replace former Ambassador Eric Garcetti. If approved, the young Trump ally would become the youngest US Ambassador to India ever.
