A 72-year-old woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances on a sidewalk outside the New York Botanical Garden early this week, according to police.
The woman, identified Wednesday as Lydia Marzan, was discovered unresponsive around 6:50 a.m. Tuesday on Southern Boulevard in the Bedford Park area, just outside the nationally recognized botanical landmark, authorities said.
Law enforcement sources reported that Marzan was wearing only a shirt, underwear, and socks when she was found. Additional clothing had been neatly folded and placed on the ground nearby, raising questions for investigators.
Marzan, who lived approximately two miles away in the Fordham Heights neighborhood, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police noted that she had bruising above one eye and a cut on her hand, though it remains unclear whether the injuries were caused by an accidental fall or were the result of foul play.
The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to officially determine the cause and manner of death. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together what led to the woman’s death.
