India and Pakistan are set to face off in a thrilling Asia Cup match in Dubai on Sunday, and former England spinner Monty Panesar thinks the Indian team has a clear edge. He believes Suryakumar Yadav’s squad looks stronger and more balanced, making them the favorites in this high-stakes clash between the arch-rivals.
Panesar, a big fan of India-Pakistan cricket battles, pointed out India’s mix of explosive batters and top bowlers gives them the upper hand. “India are favorites to win because their team is stronger overall,” he told . “Pakistan needs to step up 10-20% extra to compete. The world loves watching these matches, and it should be a great contest. But right now, Pakistan isn’t as strong yet.”
The hype around the game feels muted back home, thanks to ongoing political tensions between the two neighbors. It all stems from the Pahalgam terrorist attack in May, which killed 26 civilians. India responded with Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir to stop future attacks.
As per the Union Sports Ministry’s rules, India can only play Pakistan in big international events like the Asia Cup. Bilateral series in each other’s country are off the table for now.
Both teams kicked off the Asia Cup on a high note. India crushed UAE by nine wickets in their opener, while Pakistan smashed Oman by 93 runs in Dubai on Friday. This marks a new era for India without T20I legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who retired from the format last year. Pakistan, meanwhile, is missing former captains Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, who didn’t make the squad for this UAE tournament.
Cricket fans can’t wait to see if India can keep their winning momentum going against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023.
