Bridgetown, Oct 9 – Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla kicked off a workshop on “Leveraging Technology: Enhancing Democracy through Transformations and Tackling the Digital Divide” at the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Barbados.
Birla said India, which makes up about 60 % of the Commonwealth’s population, is a strong supporter of democracy, inclusive growth and human rights. He highlighted India’s ongoing work with the Commonwealth Youth Programme and the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation. “India is proud to contribute to initiatives like the Commonwealth Youth Programme and Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation,” he posted on X on Thursday.
During the session, Birla spotlighted India’s climate‑action milestones. “We met carbon‑intensity reduction targets ahead of schedule and are pushing forward with the Green Hydrogen Mission and new solar parks,” he explained.
He also praised India’s progress in digital transformation, women and youth empowerment, and citizen engagement. These efforts, he noted, build transparency, sustainability and inclusive growth.
Earlier in the week, Birla joined speakers and leaders from around the world at the conference’s opening ceremony, which ran under the theme “The Commonwealth – A Global Partner.” The event underscored dialogue, cooperation and shared democratic values as keys to a fairer, more inclusive world.
The Indian delegation, led by Birla, arrived in Bridgetown on Tuesday. The group includes Deputy Chairman Rajya Sabha Harivansh Narayan Singh; MPs Anurag Sharma, D. Purandeswari, K. Sudhakar, Rekha Sharma and Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade; and secretaries general Utpal Kumar Singh (Lok Sabha) and P.C. Mody (Rajya Sabha).
Birla will visit Barbados leaders and meet members of the Indian diaspora during his stay. The conference will continue through October 12.
