President Trump pledged a strong response on Saturday following a deadly attack on US and coalition forces in Palmyra, Syria, that claimed the lives of three American service members.
“We will retaliate,” Trump told reporters as he departed the White House to attend the Army–Navy football game.
“We mourn the loss of three great patriots in Syria,” he said. “We know how it happened. It was an ambush — terrible.”
Trump also noted that three other Americans were wounded in the attack but appeared to be recovering. “We also have three wounded that seem to be doing pretty well,” he said. “But we mourn the loss. These are three great people, and it’s just a terrible thing.”
The president said Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, whom he described as “fighting along with us,” was deeply shaken by the incident. “This was an ISIS attack on us and Syria,” Trump added. “We mourn the loss and we pray for them and the parents and their loved ones.”
The ambush occurred during a desert patrol near Palmyra, where an attacker opened fire on the group. Three Americans — including two US Army soldiers and a civilian US interpreter — were killed in the assault.
Syrian media also reported that two members of the Syrian military were injured during the attack.
“Today in Palmyra, Syria, two United States Army soldiers and one civilian U.S. interpreter were killed, and three were wounded,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement.
“The attack occurred as the soldiers were conducting a key leader engagement,” Parnell said, adding that their mission was part of ongoing counter-ISIS and counterterrorism operations.
Parnell noted that the names of the victims and additional details would be released at least 24 hours after their next of kin have been notified.
