A man from Queens has been found guilty of fatally shooting his 25‑year‑old nephew during a brawl over who would pay for chicken at a family barbecue.
Durran Morgan, 40, was first kicked out of his relatives’ home in St. Albans after a fight with his nephew, Chevaughn Millings, over the cost of the food at a Memorial Day gathering in 2023.
Witnesses say Morgan burst back into the house and fired 10 shots at Millings, killing him. His 20‑year‑old niece was also hit – a bullet grazed her forehead and struck her leg – but she survived and is recovering.
Morgan fled to Georgia, only to return to New York and turn himself in. A jury took under two hours to convict him of murder and assault, and he will be sentenced to a term of up to life in prison on Dec. 16.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz stated that the holiday weekend “turned to complete tragedy” when the defendant used a gun over a “petty dispute about food payment,” adding, “Gun violence is never the answer to any argument.”
