Senators block dueling health care proposals days before ObamaCare premiums set to spike

On Thursday the Senate turned down two partisan health‑care bills—just weeks before premiums on the Affordable Care Act exchanges are scheduled to jump more than 100 %.
The body first moved to halt a proposal from Sens. Bill Cassidy (R‑La.) and Mike Crapo (R‑Idaho) that would wipe out the COVID‑era subsidies and set up health‑savings accounts for the next two years.
Later that day, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D‑NY) tried to extend those subsidies for an additional three years, but the effort didn’t clear the 60‑vote mark needed to end a filibuster.
In both instances 51 senators opened debate while 48 voted against it. Rand Paul (R‑Ky.) joined all 47 Democrats to block the Cassidy‑Crapo plan, while GOP senators Susan Collins, Josh Hawley, Lisa Murkowski, and Dan Sullivan crossed party lines to back Schumer’s approach.
