Christina Chambers, the former WBRC 6 sports reporter who had given up the newsroom to become a high‑school teacher, was tragically found dead along with her husband at their Hoover, Alabama, home. The couple is believed to have died in a suspected murder‑suicide – both having gunshot wounds – and police say the incident is still under investigation.
The family’s 3‑year‑old son was at the house that morning, but he was unharmed. Hoover Police confirmed the discovery around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, noting that the children were left safe while the parents were reported shot.
For years, Chambers was a familiar face on WBRC 6, anchoring the popular “Sideline” segment that brought local sports into prime‑time viewership. She left the station’s full‑time roster in 2021 to focus on teaching, but still appeared freelance during the most recent football season and continued to cover major events like local marathons.
After the move to education she became a respected broadcast journalism teacher at Thompson High School. In 2024 she received the Alabama Scholastic Press Association Advisor of the Year award. Her mentorship helped the school earn a journalism sustainability award, produced two Alabama Journalists of the Year, led a team to a SkillsUSA State Championship in Broadcast News, and brought home two All‑Alabama Overall Broadcast Awards. Dr. Wayne Vickers, superintendent of Alabaster City Schools, called her “a cherished part of the Warrior family” and offered his community’s collective prayers.
Before her time at WBRC 6, Chambers moved around the Southeast, reporting for WLTZ NBC38 in Columbus, Georgia, and for Comcast Sports Southeast in Atlanta where she covered Auburn University. Despite leaving the station, she remained a lifelong supporter of the Tigers, a fact she highlighted in her last Facebook post celebrating their victory in the “Battle of the Bones.”
A graduate of the University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB) in 2011 with a bachelor’s in journalism, Chambers also competed on the UAB women’s track and field team for four years. Outside of the classroom she pursued her passion for running, completing three Boston Marathons and planning to run a fourth in 2026.
