A woman was set ablaze on a Chicago CTA Blue Line train late Monday night after a heated argument turned violent. The attacker, a 45‑year‑old man, poured a liquid on the 26‑year‑old passenger and lit it on fire.
The heated exchange happened near Clark and Lake streets in the Loop around 9:25 p.m. When the train stopped at Clark/Lake station, the attacker fled while the woman collapsed, still smoldering, outside the car. Police arrived and found the flames already out.
The victim was immediately taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. Witnesses said she was in severe pain and hyperventilating. Hospital staff and paramedics rushed in, and a large ambulance crew attended the scene.
Service on the Blue Line was halted for several hours, but normal trains started running again by Tuesday morning. Police entered the scene with a person of interest in custody, and the investigation continues.
A 27‑year‑old woman’s death last month, a 27‑year‑old stabbing at a nearby station, and a separate murder on North Carolina’s Lynx Blue Line all highlight a worrying surge in violent commuter incidents across the country.
Chicago Police say they are looking into all the attacks carefully and will keep the public updated on any new developments.
