An 18‑year‑old was taken into custody after police said he fired several shots outside a party in Hempstead this past month. According to the Nassau County detective team, the teenager—Jacob McMillan from Baldwin—opened fire just before 11 p.m. on November 22, killing a 19‑year‑old Monroe University basketball player, Amira McCleod, and wounding two 20‑year‑old Nassau Community College students. The police are still figuring out whether the shooting was aimed at particular people or if the victims were simply caught in the crossfire.
McCleod, a Queens‑born guard who stood 5‑foot‑3, was well known for her defensive work, averaging almost two steals per game. She had played ten games for the Monroe women’s team, and the back‑court duo had just battled a 67‑44 win over Dutchess Community College, her last game, hours before the shooting. Her teammates remembered her as a cornerstone of the squad, and the coaching staff has said the team’s recent 21‑point triumph over Suffolk County Community College was a tribute to her.
The two students who were shot made it to the hospital but were later discharged. McMillan faces charges of murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and burglary. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Wednesday and remains in custody without bail, per the Nassau District Attorney’s Office. Monroe University released a statement describing McCleod as a “cherished member” of the team and expressing that the whole campus community was “devastated by the tragic loss.”
