A Texas police department says a man named Brandon Ashley was arrested after the body of his wife, 33‑year‑old high‑school biology teacher Chelsea Spillers, was found in their Alvarado home. Authorities say the death, discovered on Saturday, Oct. 18, is an “unexplained” case that could be murder.
Detectives were called in for a welfare check on the couple’s house. They found Spillers lying on the floor, the coroner reports, with blunt‑force trauma that points to a violent death. Police now suspect Ashley, who lives about 150 miles away in Grimes County.
Just two days earlier, sheriff’s deputies on a routine patrol stopped a shirtless man who had been loitering near a convenience store in Bedias. The suspect, later identified as Ashley, reportedly talked about a mental health episode and said he didn’t want to use a nearby highway because “there were too many cops.” When questioned, he told officers he had left a pistol close to the store. Deputies later recovered an Astra .357‑caliber gun that matched a description the police gave.
Ashley was booked into the Grimes County Jail and is awaiting extradition to Johnson County, where prosecutors will present the murder charge. The Alvarado Police Department can’t say for certain whether a conviction is imminent. “An arrest is not a conviction,” the department said, adding the case is still under investigation.
Spillers was a beloved teacher in the Alvarado Independent School District. The district urged the community to remember her dedicated work with students and her love for the school team. The district offered condolences to her friends and family during this tragic time.
