Texan dies after getting stuck in clothing donation box: ‘I can’t breathe!’

A man died after falling inside an upside‑down clothing donation box, police said. The emergency line was called at about 1:30 a.m., when he shouted, “I can’t breathe!” and “I’m having problems breathing,” according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Responders arrived quickly, but he was already trapped in a position that hindered him from breathing and he didn’t make it.

Constable Mark Herman explained that the victim was caught in an awkward spot inside the box, making it impossible for him to breathe. He said it still isn’t clear why or how the man got inside, but the constable urged people to avoid these containers, noting that they’re designed to prevent access. He added that the victim might have been homeless.

Arms for Hope, the Christian nonprofit that runs the donation box, confirmed they were aware of the death. The organization expressed its condolences, saying, “Our hearts and prayers are with the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time.”

Earlier this year, a woman in Lodi, California, lost her life after her head got stuck in a donation box. A similar incident occurred in Florida, where a woman who was trying to take clothing out of a bin died after she became partially stuck.
