77-year-old Gunman Dies After Shooting at Idaho Sheriff’s Office Leaves Three Injured

A 77-year-old man was killed following a shooting at an Idaho sheriff’s office that left three people hurt, authorities said.

The violence broke out around 2:30 p.m. Friday outside the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office in Wallace. Sheriff William Eddy said the suspect, identified as John Drake, opened fire near the building, triggering a chaotic scene.

According to officials, Drake fired into the windshield of a pickup truck parked on the street, hitting two women in the leg. During the incident, a sheriff’s deputy was also injured.

CNN reported that the officer was struck by shattered glass and suffered a minor injury to the ear.

Authorities confirmed that all three victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

After the initial shots, Drake went inside the sheriff’s office lobby and continued firing before retreating and barricading himself within the building, the Shoshone News Press reported.

The shooting led to a large-scale police response, with officers from multiple agencies — including a SWAT team — rushing to the scene.

Following a standoff with law enforcement, Drake was shot and killed. He was pronounced dead at 4:15 p.m., Sheriff Eddy said.

“This is a fairly significant event when you have a person that goes into a lobby of a sheriff’s office and starts a shootout,” Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris told reporters.

Officials said no one inside the jail was harmed. Investigators have not yet determined a motive, and the case remains under active investigation.
