Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has shared his heartfelt condolences over the death of former Chief Minister Donwa Dethwelson Lapang, fondly called Maheh Lapang. The veteran leader passed away at Bethany Hospital in Shillong on the night of September 12 at the age of 93.
In a touching post on X (formerly Twitter), Sangma remembered Lapang as a dedicated people’s leader who spent his entire life working for Meghalaya’s welfare and growth. “Deeply saddened by the passing of Former Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr. D. D. Lapang. Maheh Lapang was a true leader of the people whose commitment to public service spanned decades,” Sangma wrote.
He highlighted Lapang’s key role in creating the Ri Bhoi District, a contribution that people there still cherish deeply. Elected as Chief Minister four times between 1992 and 2010, Lapang left a lasting mark on the state. “His role in shaping Ri Bhoi District remains unforgettable, and he continues to be revered as one of its own by the people there,” Sangma added.
Sangma also reflected on Lapang’s enduring legacy. “A statesman with a heart to serve, his legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the path he paved for Meghalaya’s future,” he said. He extended his deepest sympathies to Lapang’s family and the people of the state, ending with, “Rest in peace, dearest Maheh.”
Later, Sangma visited the late leader’s residence to personally console Lapang’s wife, Kong Amethyst L J Blah, and their family. Sharing photos from the visit on X, he noted, “Maheh Lapang lived a life of great service and touched many hearts with his humility. May God give peace and solace to the family.”
Born on April 10, 1932, Lapang’s contributions to Meghalaya politics and public service will be remembered for generations.
