US President Donald Trump said he had a friendly phone call with Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday, according to a post on his Truth Social account.
Trump told followers that the two leaders had a brief, upbeat chat about the economy, trade and other issues. He added that the conversation was a good start toward easing tensions after the U.S. slapped a 50‑percent tariff on Brazilian goods last summer.
The call came after a short face‑to‑face meeting at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Trump noted that he saw Lula before he delivered his speech, complimenting him as a “good man.” The leaders then spoke for about 30 minutes over video, exchanged contacts, and planned a future visit.
Brazil’s Finance Minister Fernando Haddad described the discussion as positive, and Politico reports that this is the first substantive talk between the two nations since the tariffs were imposed. Trump concluded that the United States and Brazil will “do very well together” and promised further talks and a meeting in the near future.
The conversation shows a possible shift in U.S. policy toward Brazil, with both sides signalling a desire to split the high barriers that were put in place in the summer.
