Washington, DC – President Donald Trump spoke to reporters on Friday after the Nobel Committee announced that Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado would receive the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. Trump said he had helped Machado many times and that she had thanked him for her support in a phone call.

In a brief statement, the former president told the press at the White House: “She called me today and said she’s accepting the prize in honor of me because she thinks I deserved it. I haven’t asked for it. I’ve been helping her and the people of Venezuela during their crisis. I’m proud because I helped save millions of lives.”

Machado is being honored for her fight to restore democracy in Venezuela and her role in the country’s move toward a peaceful transition from dictatorship. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised her courage and her perseverance in keeping democratic values alive in a tense region.

Trump, who had hoped to be recognized for ending seven wars, also linked his peacemaking claims to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He mentioned several conflicts he claimed to have resolved, including Armenia‑Azerbaijan, Kosovo‑Serbia, Israel‑Iran, Egypt‑Ethiopia, Rwanda‑Congo, and more.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu joined the praise for Trump, tweeting on Thursday that the former U.S. president deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. “Give @realDonaldTrump the Nobel Peace Prize – he deserves it!” the Israeli leader wrote.

The Nobel Committee’s statement noted that democracy is key to lasting peace, but many countries still struggle with authoritarianism, limited free press, and political repression. They said Machado’s work shows how democratic tools can foster peace and hope for a future where every citizen’s rights are protected.

The award to Machado follows the Nobel criteria, which evaluate peace efforts that promote human rights and democratic freedoms. She meets all three guidelines laid out by Alfred Nobel for the selection of a peace laureate.
