Heavy rain lashes TN, weather office issues orange alert in 11 districts

In Chennai on Oct 22, a cold, low‑pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal is turning into a heavy rainfall threat for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai said the depression is gathering strength and could evolve into a cyclonic storm by tonight.

The RMC’s alerts warn that many districts will face very heavy to extremely heavy rain in the next 24 hours. Red‑level warnings go out for Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai—areas that may get the heaviest showers. Orange alerts cover 11 districts, including Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Ranipet, where rainfall will be very heavy. Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Vellore, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri and Pudukottai have been flagged for strong showers.

The forecast for Wednesday predicts intense rain in Chennai and surrounding districts, while Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore and even Puducherry could also see heavy downpours. For the next three hours, the RMC expects moderate to heavy rain across 14 districts, from Chennai to the Nilgiris and Tiruppur.

Officials urge people in low‑lying and coastal areas to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for the intensified northeast monsoon. Stay tuned for updates from the RMC and local authorities as the weather evolves.
