Calm Returns to India-Nepal Border After Nepal’s Gen Z Protests
The Banbasa-Nepal border in Uttarakhand has finally settled down following the massive Gen Z movement protests in Nepal. Vehicle traffic stays stopped, but people with essential needs can cross on foot under tight security checks.
For the last three days, Mahendranagar—a key town in Nepal’s Kanchanpur district right next to Banbasa in Champawat district—has been under a strict curfew. The Nepali Army keeps a close watch, letting locals grab essentials like food and medicine during brief morning and evening slots.
This curfew’s effects spill over to the Indian side, turning the once-busy Banbasa international border eerily quiet. It feels a lot like those early COVID-19 lockdown days when everything halted. Normally, this border crossing buzzes with travelers from India, Nepal, and beyond, but right now, only foot crossings for urgent matters are allowed.
India’s Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which guards the India-Nepal border, stays on high alert. Police in Champawat and nearby Udham Singh Nagar districts keep a sharp eye on things too. You can sense the tension in the air along this vital Indo-Nepal border stretch.
Inspector General of Police for Kumaon Range, Riddhim Agarwal, visited security setups near Banbasa and Khatima herself. SSB’s 57th Battalion Commandant Manohar Lal also checks border posts regularly to stay on top of the situation and keep things stable.
With reports of prisoners released from Nepali jails amid the unrest, IG Agarwal stressed the importance of extra vigilance. She told security teams to patrol non-stop and block any anti-national activities. "The open Indo-Nepal border has thick forests in many areas, so we’ve alerted the forest department," Agarwal added. Forest rangers now team up with security forces to stop illegal crossings and strengthen national security.
As the Gen Z movement in Nepal cools off, authorities on both sides focus on safety and smooth essential movement at this key border point.
