Human Rights Lawyer Reed Brody Backs Balochistan’s Fight Against Abuses
In a powerful speech at the 7th Balochistan International Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, renowned American human rights lawyer Reed Brody stood up for the people of Balochistan. He called on the world to demand accountability and independent probes into serious human rights violations happening there.
The event took place at the Geneva Press Club, right alongside the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council. The Baloch National Movement (BNM) organized it, drawing activists, researchers, and rights experts to spotlight the crisis.
Brody, famous for his work with survivors from brutal regimes like Chile’s Augusto Pinochet, Haiti’s Jean-Claude Duvalier, and Chad’s Hissene Habre, shared a key message. He pointed out that no dictator escapes justice forever. "These leaders thought they could crush opposition with fear and violence," Brody said. "But the survivors wouldn’t stay silent. Their grit brought real change—not governments, but people like you." He sees the same fire in Balochistan’s activists today.
Balochistan’s struggles can’t be swept under the rug, Brody warned. He pushed for urgent international investigations into enforced disappearances, unlawful killings, and threats against women activists. Turning to Pakistani officials, he demanded they stop using excessive force, free those arrested for peaceful protests, and bring back internet access in affected areas.
Brody rallied for global support, stressing that the fight for truth takes time but always pays off. "Stand with the victims’ voices, push for justice, and don’t let politics bury basic human rights," he urged.
Speaking straight to Balochistan’s survivors, Brody praised their bravery. "Your courage counts. History proves truth gets delayed, but never denied. Keep speaking out," he encouraged.
The conference buzzed with talks on extrajudicial killings, abductions, and curbs on free speech in Balochistan. Everyone there agreed: the world needs to monitor the situation closely. Staying quiet just lets the abuses continue.
This call for action on Balochistan human rights violations echoes growing global demands for change in the region.
