In the village of Ranibandh in Bankura district, West Bengal, locals staged a protest on Saturday after a sub‑inspector was accused of beating his servant and harassing the servant’s sister. Residents demanded decisive action and blocked roads to make their voices heard.
Sources say the sub‑inspector locked the servant, Sajal Sahis, in his rented house after accusing him of shoplifting. The officer allegedly struck Sajal with a belt and a stick, threatened him with a service revolver, and even said he could drop him from the third‑floor roof. Police allegedly told Sajal that he had stolen ₹12 lakh from the house—an allegation that the servant denied, claiming he was framed because some money was found in the officer’s pockets last Thursday.
The punishment didn’t end there. The next day, the officer purportedly returned to Sajal’s home in Rajakata village, again beat him, and seized cash and jewelry. When the family tried to stop him, the officer reportedly molested Sajal’s sister. After enduring hours of torture, Sajal fell ill and was taken to Ranibandh Block Primary Health Centre that evening.
When the community learned of these accusations, they gathered in the evening and, the next morning, obstructed the Khudiram Statue intersection by burning tires. The blockade halted traffic on the Bankura–Jhilimili and Bankura–Barikul state highways. The demonstrators called off the protest in the evening after the police promised to take action.
Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Tiwari said no formal complaint had yet been filed, but the Khatra SDPO was ordered to investigate immediately and to report findings. “If wrongdoing is found, the officer will be prosecuted,” he assured the press. The superintendent also mentioned that the protesters had been invited to speak with the accused officer at Ranibandh Police Station, but the community chose to block the road instead.
