New Delhi, Oct 13 – Businesses in India can now file their annual GST returns online. The government has upgraded the GST portal so that registered taxpayers can submit Form GSTR‑9, the yearly return for the 2024‑25 financial year, and the reconciliation statement, Form GSTR‑9C, directly through the site.
The official deadline to file GSTR‑9 is December 31 2025. Because the filing window is shorter than usual, experts say taxpayers should start the process early to avoid last‑minute rushes.
Who needs to file
- All regular scheme taxpayers – This includes standard GST‑registered businesses, SEZ units, and SEZ developers.
- Those who moved from the composition scheme to the regular scheme during the year must also file GSTR‑9.
- Composition‑scheme businesses – They use Form GSTR‑9A instead of GSTR‑9.
- Taxpayers with a turnover over ₹2 crore – They are required to submit GSTR‑9, regardless of how they’re registered.
Certain groups do not have to file annually:
- Casual taxpayers
- Non‑resident taxpayers
- Input Service Distributors (ISD)
- OIDAR service providers
And the government can, by notification, exempt additional groups from filing in the future.
When to file GSTR‑9C
If a business’s aggregate turnover surpasses the threshold set by the government, it must file Form GSTR‑9C. These taxpayers must also have their accounts audited by a Chartered Accountant or Cost Accountant and attach the audited annual accounts with the reconciliation statement.
Why it matters
The new portal streamlines the filing process, letting tax professionals and business owners begin their GST compliance for FY 2024–25 right away. GSTR‑9 summarizes a company’s sales, purchases, and the GST paid or collected over the financial year, helping both the government and businesses keep accurate records.
With the deadline fast approaching, now is the time for firms to gather their documents and file on the GST portal to stay compliant and avoid penalties.
