In Johannesburg, where the G20 summit was taking place, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the UK’s new prime minister, Keir Starmer, on the sidelines. Modi said the two leaders had refreshed the India‑UK partnership, adding that this year has brought “new energy” to their cooperation, a sentiment he later shared on X.
Following their conversation, Modi praised the meeting in a post, noting that they would keep pushing the alliance forward across a range of sectors. The encounter came on the back of Starmer’s recent visit to India, during which he was accompanied by the country’s largest trade delegation ever and held extensive talks with Modi in Mumbai to strengthen ties.
Earlier in the year, Modi had flown to the United Kingdom. While in Britain, he held a personal meeting with Starmer at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country retreat, and also hosted broader delegation talks. The two leaders celebrated the signing of the India‑UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which elevated their partnership to a new strategic level and opened fresh avenues for trade, investment, and job creation.
This month, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri journeyed to London for his inaugural bilateral trip, underscoring the ongoing deepening of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and collaboration in key sectors.
On October 31, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke at an event organized by the British High Commission on King Charles’s birthday in New Delhi. He highlighted that, over time, the relationship has moved from a “complicated historical association” to a “dynamic and forward‑looking partnership.” According to Jaishankar, the past year has been “exceptional” for their “modern relationship.” He recalled welcoming Prime Minister Starmer to Mumbai with the UK’s biggest trade delegation, and that three months earlier, Modi had visited the UK, where the CETA was signed. During that visit, the leaders defined Vision 2035, a roadmap covering growth, technology and innovation, defence and security, climate and clean energy, and education, and they also launched a Defence Industrial Roadmap for the first time.
