New Delhi, Nov 27 (LatestNewsX) – Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce that exports to Washington have gone up.
During the committee’s session, the minister was asked to give a detailed account of India–US trade dynamics, especially after the Trump administration’s tariff hikes. Delegates pressed the ministry for clarity on the rupee’s slide against the dollar, the effect on Indian farmers, and the relief packages planned for firms hit hard by the new duties.
After answering the queries, Agrawal asked for ten days to compile comprehensive written responses, which the ministry will submit within that time.
The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Dec 16, and officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, the MSME Ministry and the Ministry of Textiles will be invited to discuss trade ties further. The Commerce Secretary’s findings will feed into those discussions. Industry leaders from FICCI, ASSOCHAM and other trade groups are also expected to attend the Dec 16 session.
Earlier this month, the minister said India and the United States are “nearing closure” on the first tranche of a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). He added that the two sides have been holding regular virtual talks and that the initial stage is moving quickly, even though a formal deadline hasn’t been set.
President Donald Trump sent encouraging signals this month, suggesting a deeper U.S.–India partnership could materialise soon. At the White House, he told reporters that his talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi were “going great” and that he might visit New Delhi next year. Trump also said he intends to “lower tariffs” on India “at some point,” hinting that a breakthrough in the trade negotiations could arrive shortly. When asked about the prospects for a deal, he remarked, “I think we’re pretty close to doing a deal (with India) that’s good for everybody,” in the ceremony that swore in Sergio Gor as the new U.S. Ambassador to India.
