New Delhi: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Tuesday that the recently passed Labour Codes will bring significant benefits to informal‑sector and gig workers. He explained that these workers used to juggle a maze of paperwork, inspections, and regulations; the new laws streamline procedures and guarantee better access to facilities, social security, and healthier working conditions.
Goyal noted that both employers and employees have praised the changes. Speaking at the National Conference of Trade Leaders in New Delhi, he highlighted additional reforms that boost business ease and protect workers’ welfare. He urged traders to champion Swadeshi products, urging suppliers to label the manufacturing location on packaging and encouraging stores to display that they sell Swadeshi goods. He underlined the need to broaden the reach of “Made in India” items.
The minister also pointed to the Jan Vishvas Bill, which has markedly simplified compliance and reduced procedural burdens, as a key driver of this improved business climate. In response to proposals for a “One Nation, One License” system, he suggested that cities like Delhi and Maharashtra pilot a unified online portal that merges state and municipal trade licences.
The new Labour Codes aim to promote industrial harmony, raise productivity, and support a balanced, growth‑oriented workplace. They champion fairness, equity, and inclusivity across India’s labour market. By establishing uniform wage standards and social security measures, the codes protect workers’ rights while also safeguarding the interests of employers. In sum, they reinforce economic justice, foster formalisation, and elevate the dignity of work.
The four codes are: the Code on Wages (2019), the Industrial Relations Code (2020), the Code on Social Security (2020), and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code (2020). Together, they modernise and simplify compliance, creating an efficient framework that balances business ease with robust worker protection.
