NEW Delhi – The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced that it has implemented sweeping measures to curb spam and fraud in the telecom market, pulling the plug on more than 2.1 million mobile numbers and blacklisting roughly 100 000 entities over the past twelve months, the Ministry of Communications revealed on Monday.
The crackdown was sparked by citizen complaints, and TRAI is now encouraging people to continue flagging spam through the TRAI DND App so the root of misuse can be tackled early.
Many users think that simply blocking an unsolicited number on their phone is enough. While blocking does hide the caller on a single device, it doesn’t stop the scammer from reaching other victims.
When reporters submit spam calls or texts to the official TRAI DND App, telecom providers can trace the origin and permanently sever the numbers engaged in fraud or unwanted communication.
TRAI noted that the large‑scale effort last year was possible only because hundreds of thousands of people used the DND App to flag suspicious calls and messages. Public involvement, it said, is vital to creating a safe and trustworthy telecom ecosystem.
The regulator urges users to grab the TRAI DND App from legitimate app stores and report spam instead of merely blocking numbers.
It also reminded people not to disclose personal or banking details via calls, texts, or social media, and to disconnect promptly if they receive threatening or suspicious correspondence.
Cyber‑fraud incidents should be reported to the National Cybercrime Helpline (1930) or through the cybercrime.gov.in portal.
Telecom‑related scam attempts can also be handed over to Sanchar Saathi’s “Chakshu” feature.
Reaffirming its pledge to protect citizens—especially seniors, women, and users who are less tech‑savvy—TRAI called on the public to stay vigilant, share the advisory, and report any odd communication immediately.
The Authority added that sustained reporting, coupled with technology‑driven monitoring and enforcement, is essential to shutting down spam and fraud at their source.
