Benicio del Toro couldn’t hide his excitement while chatting about teaming up with Leonardo DiCaprio on their new film, One Battle After Another. The Oscar-winning actor spilled the beans at the movie’s Los Angeles premiere, sharing how much he admires Leo’s talent.
Del Toro revealed he’s been a huge fan of DiCaprio’s work for decades, and finally getting to act alongside him felt like a dream come true. "With Leo, you just let him bring the character, and you… he drives the story," Del Toro said, according to People magazine. He explained that he shaped his own role to complement DiCaprio’s energy, ensuring their characters fueled the plot together.
"It’s like working around him and making sure we fed the story with my character in it," he added. Del Toro also gushed, "Leo is one of those actors I’ve been admiring for decades, and I never had a chance to work with. So getting this chance was a great experience and opportunity for me. I hope he feels the same way."
DiCaprio, no stranger to blockbuster hits, shared his own enthusiasm for the project. He’s a massive fan of director Paul Thomas Anderson, whose films have stuck with him since he first saw Boogie Nights. "Ever since I met Paul early on, I’ve been an obsessive fan of his work. I’ve watched all his movies," DiCaprio told the crowd, as quoted by People.
He went on to praise Anderson’s storytelling: "His films ruminate in my mind, and they’re conversation pieces with my friends. They last. Awards and box office numbers come and go, but those pieces of art that you still talk about and question—that’s what we strive for as actors. Paul is the guy of our generation who makes them."
One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, boasts a stellar cast including Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor, and Regina Hall. The story follows a band of former revolutionaries who reunite to rescue one of their grown daughters, according to the IMDb synopsis reported by People.
At CinemaCon 2025 in April, DiCaprio hyped up the film as an "incredibly epic movie" with massive scope and scale. He highlighted Anderson’s unique style: "A lot of writer-directors are rigid, but his ability to work with actors is so special. It’s an honor to collaborate with him."
