Odisha Court Sentences College Lecturer to 20 Years for Sexually Abusing Minor Student
A shocking case of sexual abuse has led to a stern punishment in Odisha. On Wednesday, a court in Mayurbhanj district handed down a 20-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to Manas Ranjan Barik, a former college lecturer. The court found him guilty of sexually abusing a minor student and sharing her private photos and videos on social media.
Barik, who lives in Rasgobindpur area of Mayurbhanj, was once a gold medalist lecturer at a local college. The victim, a Plus 2 Science student there in 2022, filed a complaint at Baripada Town Police Station on March 29, 2022. She accused him of forcing a physical relationship multiple times by promising marriage.
Things got worse when Barik secretly recorded nude photos and videos of the minor on his phone. Earlier, he had shared this objectionable content online, which led families from both sides to meet and settle the matter. Barik promised to delete everything, but he broke that promise and circulated the material again. This pushed the victim to go to the police, who arrested him the very next day on March 30, 2022.
After a detailed trial, the court reviewed statements from seven witnesses, 25 pieces of evidence, and the police investigation report. It convicted Barik under charges related to sexual abuse of a minor and circulating explicit content. To support the victim, the court ordered the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Mayurbhanj to provide her with Rs 1 lakh as compensation.
This verdict highlights the growing fight against sexual abuse cases in Odisha, where courts are cracking down on offenders who exploit minors under false promises.
Another Conviction in Jajpur: 30 Years for Similar Crime
In a related development, a court in Jajpur district also delivered justice on Wednesday. It sentenced a man to 30 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a minor girl last year in the Kuakhai area. He had lured her with marriage promises, showing how seriously Odisha courts are treating such child sexual abuse incidents.
These rulings serve as a strong warning against exploiting vulnerable students and minors in educational settings. Authorities continue to urge victims to come forward and report such crimes for swift action.
