In a rapid response after the tragic loss of 20 children, the Madhya Pradesh Police have dispatched a team from Chhindwara to Chennai and Kanchipuram. The goal is to arrest the owner of Sresan Pharma, the company that produced the toxic cough syrup “Coldrif,” which is blamed for the deaths.
Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla confirmed the move in Chhindwara on Wednesday. “A police team is heading to Chennai and Kanchipuram to arrest the owner of the company that makes Coldrif,” he said, adding that the state is doing everything to deliver justice.
The crisis erupted when children in Madhya Pradesh, many from Chhindwara, died after taking Coldrif. The latest reports show the death toll at 20, with 17 in Chhindwara, one in Pandhurna and two in Betul. Three new children died in the last 24 hours, and five remain in critical condition in Nagpur hospitals.
Medical investigations revealed that Coldrif contained dangerous chemicals that damaged the kids’ kidneys. Symptoms of kidney failure appeared within hours of ingestion, causing the children’s rapid decline. To combat the spread, officials sealed five drug stores and sent syrup samples to laboratories for testing. Local leaders are urging parents not to give any cough syrup to children under four.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has criticized the authorities for potentially blaming doctors in the investigation. Some private doctors, including Praveen Soni, are under scrutiny for prescribing the syrup. The IMA warned it could strike, prompting the Deputy CM to urge restraint. “Doctors must not strike and should follow the Union government’s advice against cold syrups for children,” he said.
Political reactions have also surfaced. The Congress party demands ₹1 crore compensation for each affected family and accuses the government of negligence. The BJP maintains that the investigation is transparent and promises to hold the responsible parties accountable.
This developing story highlights a growing public health concern and underscores the urgent need for regulatory oversight in India’s pharmaceutical sector.
