Good news for Meghalaya! The state’s dream of having its own government medical college is finally coming true. On September 3, the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved the Shillong Medical College with a crucial Letter of Permission (LoP). This is a big step forward for healthcare in Northeast India and marks Meghalaya’s first state-run medical institution.
Meghalaya’s Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, shared the news on social media, calling it a “historic day” and a “long-cherished dream” coming true. The college will start with 50 MBBS seats, giving local students a great chance to study medicine right in their home state.
The admission process will follow the national schedule, with counselling beginning on September 4, 2025. The first academic session is set to start on September 27, 2025, matching the NEET-UG timetable.
Creating a government medical college has been a top goal for Meghalaya for many years. Until now, the state’s students had to go to other states to study medicine, and the area faced a shortage of doctors. This new college will help fix that by training more healthcare professionals locally.
Getting the LoP from the NMC is a key milestone. It officially allows the college to admit its first batch of students. The approval came after the college underwent thorough inspections of its facilities, including the teaching hospital, labs, and faculty.
This college will be a game-changer for Meghalaya’s health scene. It will open new opportunities for local students, many of whom will be able to pursue a medical career without leaving their state. In the long run, it will also help increase the number of doctors working in rural and underserved areas of Meghalaya, improving access to quality healthcare.
The attached teaching hospital will provide advanced medical care to the people of Meghalaya, especially in specialized treatments. The state government has prioritized this project, seeing it as a major milestone in improving public health and strengthening the healthcare system.
Overall, the approval of Meghalaya’s first government medical college is a huge step toward better healthcare for everyone. It’s a development that will benefit the state’s health and development for many years to come.
