Former Tamil Nadu minister and nine‑time MLA K. A. Sengottaiyan has officially joined actor‑turned‑politician Vijay’s new party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking the end of his long‑standing affiliation with the AIADMK.
His move came after he was expelled from the AIADMK by General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami for urging the party to reunite its ousted workers, a decision that sparked heavy internal conflict. Stung by the expulsion, Sengottaiyan stepped down from his seat in Gobichettipalayam and walked into the TVK headquarters in Panayur with Vijay in attendance.
On Wednesday he travelled to the AIADMK secretariat in Chennai, met the Speaker, M. Appavu, and submitted his resignation. In a striking farewell, he drove past in a car emblazoned with the party’s banner, still bore an AIADMK flag tattoo on his arm, and carried a photo of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in his pocket—symbols that underscored the emotional weight of his departure.
That evening Vijay sat down with TVK leaders Bussy Anand, Aadhav Arjuna and Nirmal Kumar at the Pattinapakkam office. Sengottaiyan arrived around 4:30 p.m. and met Vijay for nearly two hours, but the discussion remained confidential and none of the participants released any remarks afterward.
Sources say the talks unfolded in two stages. In the first, Vijay, Sengottaiyan, strategist John Arockiaswamy, Bussy Anand and Aadhav Arjuna were all present. The second, more decisive, session was limited to Vijay, Sengottaiyan and John, where key decisions were sealed.
Reports indicate that Sengottaiyan will take on a senior organisational role in TVK. He is expected to be named coordinator for the powerful Kongu belt, a region he has dominated for decades, and will report directly to Vijay—bypassing the party’s usual middle tier, a rare privilege in its hierarchy. Strategic matters concerning the Kongu region will be discussed with John Arockiaswamy.
The TVK leadership believes that Sengottaiyan’s entry will give the party a significant boost ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. More than 500 supporters, including former MP Sathyabama, are also slated to join the party alongside him.
Vijay is likely to visit an indoor arena in Erode, Sengottaiyan’s stronghold, in the coming days to meet voters, signalling an intensified focus on the region. Official details of Sengottaiyan’s responsibilities within TVK are expected to be announced soon.
