After Monday’s drawing failed to produce a perfect match, the Powerball pot jumped to an eye‑catching $1.25 billion. Lottery officials say the Wednesday prize will rank as this year’s second‑largest Powerball award. For the first time since 2022, the game has produced back‑to‑back billion‑dollar jackpots.
Matt Strawn, chair of the Powerball product group, noted that such consecutive prizes have only happened twice in the game’s history—and this one comes just before the holiday rush.
The spike came because no ticket hit all six of Monday’s numbers—white balls 23, 35, 59, 63, 68 and the red Powerball 2. Still, two tickets sold in Arizona and California nailed all five white balls, each earning a $1 million top prize.
The previous jackpot was won on September 6, when entries from Missouri and Texas split a $1.787 billion payout. The peak of $2.04 billion was reached in November 2022 when Californian Edwin Castro claimed the entire prize.
If someone wins on Wednesday, the lump‑sum cash option would be roughly $572.1 million, officials said.
