Ireland’s rising cricket star, 19-year-old spinner Freya Sargent, is stepping away from international cricket for an indefinite period due to personal reasons. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the news on its official website.
Sargent has already made her mark in the sport. She debuted for Ireland in 2023 and has played 16 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 16 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), picking up 33 wickets in total. Her standout performances earned her a nomination for the ICC Women’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award in 2024. She also shone at the first two ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cups in 2023 and 2025.
Cricket Ireland’s Director of High Performance, Graeme West, fully supports Sargent’s choice. “Freya has been a key part of our senior squad for the last three years, contributing on and off the field,” West said, as quoted by the ICC. He stressed that player wellbeing comes first. “We’re backing Freya all the way, and the team management agrees this is the right move for her. Nothing matters more than our players’ health and happiness.”
Sargent recently bounced back from an injury and played in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup European Qualifier in August. She even secured a full-time central contract with Ireland’s latest list of players. Cricket Ireland plans to keep supporting her during this break.
