On Nov 23, New Delhi – London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Gagan Narang has declared his intention to run for president of the National Rifle Association of India, setting up a direct contest against the current chief Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo in the federation’s upcoming elections.
The move gained momentum after BJP MP and industrialist Naveen Jindal bowed out of the race last week. Ajay Patel, senior vice‑president of the Indian Olympic Association, submitted Narang’s nomination on his behalf.
In an unexpected twist, Narang has also filed for vice‑president, joining a crowded field of six hopefuls that includes sitting secretary‑general Kunwar Sultan Singh.
Meanwhile, his long‑time ally Pawan Kumar Singh is set to become the next secretary‑general, as he is the sole nominee and will thus be elected unopposed. The treasurer’s contest will see Ashok Mittal face Meghasham Sripad Bhangle.
The NRAI will decide on its new leadership for the 2025–2029 term during a general‑body meeting on Dec 4 in Punjab, where a 25‑member governing board will also be elected.
Narang earlier attended the unveiling of the King’s Baton for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya revealed the baton at DLF Avenue, Saket, alongside British High Commissioner Lindy Cameron and P.T. Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India.
The ceremony, hosted by the Commonwealth Games Association of India, gathered several Olympic and CWG medallists—including Yogeshwar Dutt, Achanta Sharath Kamal and Gagan Narang—as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Sports Authority of India. vi/
