India’s wicket‑keeper batter Rishabh Pant said the side “did not play good cricket” during the two‑match Test series against South Africa and extended a heartfelt apology to the fans for failing to “live up to their expectations.”
The Indians were routed 0‑2 at home, with the Proteas controlling every phase of play in both Tests held in Kolkata and Guwahati. South Africa secured their first win in India since 2010 in the opening match and then cemented a historic series triumph by defeating India by a staggering 408 runs in the second encounter. This marked the Proteas’ second Test series victory on Indian soil, following their 2‑0 success under Hansie Cronje in February‑March 2000.
After the defeat on Wednesday, the head coach and the squad found themselves under intense pressure. Facing backlash from supporters and experts alike, Pant shared a post on Instagram, expressing regret to everyone who had placed their hopes on the team’s success and promising that both the group and its members would push hard to rebound.
“There is no shying away from the fact that we didn’t play good enough cricket over the last two weeks. As a team and as individuals, we always want to perform at the highest level and bring smiles to billions of Indians. Sorry we couldn’t live up to expectations this time, but sport teaches you to learn, adapt and grow – both as a team and as individuals.”
“Representing India is the greatest honour of our lives. We know what this team is capable of, and we will work hard, regroup, refocus and reset to come back stronger and better as a team & individuals. Thank you for your unwavering support and love! Jai Hind,” Pant wrote.
Pant stepped in as captain for the second Test after regular skipper Shubman Gill was ruled out with a neck injury. While some praised his leadership, others criticized his own batting. Admitting full responsibility and expressing remorse after the loss, Pant said during the post‑match ceremony at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati: “It’s a little disappointing. As a team we need to get better. Credit to the opposition — they dominated the series. We needed to be clear with our mindset. Cricket demands capitalising as a team, and we didn’t do that. That cost us the whole series.”
