Ahmedabad was announced today as the home for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, a decision that has sparked cheers across India.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah celebrated the pick, saying the city’s chosen status reflects “the country’s robust sports infrastructure and long‑term investment in athlete development.” He added that the announcement is “a proud moment for every Indian.”
The news came after the Commonwealth Sports General Assembly finished its sessions in Glasgow, formally naming Ahmedabad the host for the centenary edition of the Games.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel called the decision an “unparalleled moment of pride.” He believes the event will hasten Gujarat’s rise as India’s sporting capital and reinforce the vision of a “Viksit Bharat.”
Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Mansukh Mandaviya framed the Games as a celebration of India’s development journey and a testament to the nation’s commitment to sports as a driver of growth. He highlighted that the event will further strengthen India’s capability to stage sustainable, inclusive worldwide competitions.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi described the announcement as a “historic honour.” He assured the international community that Gujarat will welcome athletes and delegates with top‑class facilities, efficient systems and the country’s renowned hospitality. Sanghavi also stressed that the Games will embody Gujarat’s core values of unity, sustainability, and excellence.
Pm Narendra Modi’s vision for a stronger sporting culture, coupled with the dedicated work of Shah, Patel and Sanghavi, paved the way for Ahmedabad’s selection, according to Sanghavi. Their joint leadership, he said, has lifted India onto the global sporting stage.
The 2030 Games carry extra weight as the Commonwealth commemorates a century of sporting excellence. Hosting the centenary event becomes a powerful symbol of ambition and unity within the Commonwealth.
The international community has also welcomed the decision. PT Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, noted that hosting the centenary edition would deepen ties among Commonwealth nations and lay foundations for the next century of collaboration.
Donald Rukare, interim president of Commonwealth Sport, called Ahmedabad’s selection a “defining moment” for the movement, citing India’s scale, energy and readiness for a future‑centric Games. He highlighted the bid’s theme, “New Age Games for a New Century,” built on affordability, accessibility, inclusivity and a lasting legacy.
The core venue will be the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, one of Asia’s largest multi‑sport complexes. It will be supported by the Gujarat Police Academy in Karai, the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura, integrated transport, modern athlete housing and advanced digital infrastructure.
Sustainability will be a hallmark: venues powered by renewable energy, low‑emission transport, zero‑waste systems, and a full Paralympic program to demonstrate India’s commitment to inclusivity.
Aligning neatly with the National Sports Policy 2025, the National Sports Governance Act 2025 and the revised National Anti‑Doping Bill, these reforms have bolstered transparency, governance and athlete welfare, giving India a robust, credible bid. The path to winning the Games began with a formal invitation from Commonwealth Sport in January 2025, followed by multiple high‑level evaluations, technical presentations and on‑ground assessments in Ahmedabad.
Senior officials from the Gujarat state government, the central government and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation presented a coordinated bid that impressed the General Assembly.
Ahmedabad’s centenary Games will honor tradition, celebrate the present and shape the future of Commonwealth sport. Beyond a sporting event, it marks a transformative chapter for Gujarat and India’s journey toward a “Viksit Bharat 2047.”
