Zoho co-founder Sridhar Vembu stepped in to clear up rumors swirling on social media about his company’s operations. In a straightforward post, he shared key facts on how Zoho develops its products, handles customer data, and runs its global business.
Vembu stressed that every Zoho product gets built right in India. The company also pays taxes in India on all its worldwide earnings. “Our global headquarters sits in Chennai,” he wrote, “and we have offices in more than 80 countries. The United States stands out as one of our biggest markets, with a solid presence there.”
When it comes to data privacy, Vembu made it clear: Indian customers’ data stays hosted in India. Servers are located in Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai, and Zoho plans to add Odisha to the list soon. Globally, the company runs over 18 data centers, each keeping data for its own country or region. “We’re committed to hosting each country’s data in their jurisdiction,” he explained.
Zoho keeps things in-house for its tech setup too. All services run on hardware the company owns, powered by software frameworks they build themselves on open-source tools like Linux OS and Postgres database. Importantly, Zoho skips big cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud for hosting. That includes their homegrown messaging app, Arattai—no data gets stored on those platforms. They do use some services for faster traffic routing in certain regions, and they’re rolling out more points of presence (POPs) around the world to boost speed.
Vembu also addressed why Zoho’s apps show a U.S. address on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. It turns out an early employee registered the developer account from the U.S. for testing, and they never updated it. Simple oversight, he said.
Wrapping up, Vembu doubled down on Zoho’s roots: “Made in India, Made for the World.” This comes as the company earns high praise from top Indian leaders. Union Minister Piyush Goyal recently cheered Arattai as a “Swadeshi product,” sharing, “Nothing beats the feeling of using a Made in India messaging platform that brings India closer. My team and I are on board.”
On Tuesday, Vembu met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, fitting right into the government’s drive to promote more Indian-made products like Zoho’s offerings.
