Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his heartfelt congratulations on Thursday, praising the Deaflympians for their stellar showing in the 25th Summer Deaflympics that wrapped up in Tokyo.
India finished on a high note with a total of 20 medals—nine gold, seven silver and four bronze—thanks largely to its shooters, who grabbed 16 of those honours.
“Heartiest congratulations to our Deaflympians for their extraordinary performance at the 25th Summer Deaflympics 2025 in Tokyo. With a historic best-ever medal tally of 20 medals including 9 Golds, our athletes have once again proven that determination and dedication can lead to outstanding results. Compliments to every athlete, coach and support staff. The entire nation is proud of you all!” posted PM Modi on X.
The haul smashed the tally from Caxias do Sul in 2022, where Indian athletes collected only 16 medals, and it stands as the most successful Deaflympics campaign India has ever had.
Shooting led the delegation with 12 competitors, followed closely by athletics with 11 participants. Dhanush Srikanth repeated his 10‑m air rifle triumph, setting a fresh world record score of 252.2, while Mohammad Vania captured silver in the same event—the first time Indian shooters had taken home medals in Tokyo.
Shortly after, in the women’s 10‑m air rifle, Mahit Sandhu earned silver and Komal Waghmare took bronze. Mahit, who amassed four medals overall (two golds and two silvers), proved to be the most decorated shooter on the team.
Anuya Prasad also delivered a standout performance, breaking the previous world record in the women’s 10‑m air pistol.
The games ran from 15 to 26 November in Tokyo, attracting 73 Indian athletes—45 men and 28 women—who competed across 11 sports for a chance at the podium. The 2025 edition marked 101 years since the inaugural Deaflympics in Paris.
Olympian Diksha Dagar comfortably defended her title in the women’s golf event, finishing 14 strokes ahead of her nearest competitor.
