Stuart Binny and former Karnataka batter Bharat Chipli fired praise at India’s women after they lifted the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup trophy under captain Harmanpreet Kaur. The pair say the win makes the sport feel open for everyone, not just men.
India beat South Africa 52 runs flat in the final at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. It was the team’s first World Cup title, a moment that has already taken them to the Prime Minister’s office and the President’s house.
Binny told he felt “incredibly proud” of the squad. He said the victory showed the country that cricket belongs to everybody. “It’s a place where people can show how good they are,” he said, adding that the win will inspire many girls to pick up a bat.
Chipli highlighted that the infrastructure behind women’s cricket had been key. He thanked the BCCI, ICC and the Women’s Premier League (WPL) for creating a path that lets players train alongside top professionals, much like the IPL does for men. “That ecosystem helped us win the World Cup—our first,” he said. “It’s a huge inspiration for millions of girls in India.”
Both commentators noted that the win matters beyond trophies. Binny said the gold medal proves that Indian women’s cricket can stand side‑by‑side with the men’s side. “More women will take the sport seriously now, and that parity is huge,” he said. He also praised the team’s great records and the fan support that surrounded them.
After the final, the squad met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu—an honor only the first world‑champions receive. Binny said the recognition felt “well deserved.” “These girls have earned every celebration and every handshake,” he added. “It’s an emotional day for our country and for the players.”
Chipli echoed the sentiment, stressing how hard work over many seasons paid off. “After years of trying, the hard work finally turned into a World Cup win. They deserve all the credit,” he said.
The victorious team is heading to Hong Kong for the Sixes tournament. Fans can watch India face Pakistan on Day 1 of the Hong Kong Super Sixes Cricket League 2025 at 1:05 PM IST on Sony Sports Ten 5.
